Spurs have conducted interview with UConn big man Donovan Clingan

The San Antonio Spurs have conducted a predraft interview with UConn big man Donovan Clingan.

The NBA draft is a mere two days away and teams are beginning to finalize their plans for what should be an exciting night for everybody involved.

The San Antonio Spurs are going to be a team that will attract a lot of attention as the NBA world is very curious to see what they plan to do. They have a generational talent in Victor Wembanyama who is set to enter his second season in the league so the Spurs need to nail down the right picks.

Per ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo, the Spurs have even gone as far as interviewing UConn big man Donovan Clingan. However, it is for a very interesting reason:

San Antonio has expressed increasing interest in Clingan as of late, even going as far as interviewing him in recent days to get to know him better. Some think this might be a case of the Spurs signaling to rivals that the No. 4 pick is where they need to get to if they want to draft Clingan, as opposed to real interest in a fascinating twin-towers lineup with the 7-foot-3 UConn champion and 7-foot-5 Victor Wembanyama.

Clingan averaged 13.0 points and 7.4 rebounds along with 2.5 blocks in the 2023-24 season with the Huskies. He is a 2-time national champion so he understands what it takes to win and succeed in the game of basketball. He isn’t much of a shooter, but the idea of pairing him with Wembanyama is a very interesting one.

With that being said, as Givony and Woo mentioned, the Spurs are likely using this as a signal to some teams that they will have to trade up to grab Clingan. San Antonio could trade down if it feels the need to due to owning the No. 8 pick in the draft as well.
