Free agent-to-be Spencer Dinwiddie has officially put pressure on Nets GM Sean Marks. In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Howard Beck on The Crossover, Dinwiddie said he’s willing to return with the Nets – but shared the contract numbers he’ll need to see to stay in Brooklyn: $125 million over five years. Even if the Nets meet Dinwiddie’s asking price, it’s still not guaranteed the 28-year-old would be back:
“If the Nets come to the table like that and they’re being aggressive and saying, ‘Hey, we got five years/$125 million for you,’ like I would say, there’s a high likelihood that I go back to the Nets.”
Dinwiddie did emphasize how much he loves being on the Nets. He admitted the culture and the vibe here is what he cherishes. He wants to stay, and because of that, the 28-year-old explained how Nets owner Joe Tsai – or Clippers owner Steve Ballmer – can make it happen:
“I love being in New York with the Nets. I have an established kind of vibe there. I love my teammates — I have an established kind of culture there. I’m friends with the guys. It’s very familiar. If you’re coming with three (years) for 60 (million), well everybody is coming for three (years) for 60 (million). Right. Now if you come with five (years) for 125 (million) … ‘like ooh’ … Steve Balmer and Joe Tsai are very, very literally rich owners. They’re like way up here and all the other owners are like somewhere jostling around or whatever. And obviously still being there, still wealthy, still big time people that I can learn from … but those two have obviously separated themselves and can do whatever they want with the luxury tax. We’re just going to find out. I’ll be tuned into my own free agency.”
