Spencer Dinwiddie started 2019-20 being in the Sixth Man of the Year conversation, but as the season went along, he was being considered for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. Nets fans know well how important he was to Brooklyn’s success with Kevin Durant out and Kyrie Irving only logging 20 games.
But when the two superstars are healthy, they’ll be the ones to take control in Brooklyn. Naturally, Dinwiddie will have to adjust.
Well before his ascension, the point guard expressed he knew this team became Durant and Irving’s the moment they signed with the Nets — and he continues to stick with that line of thinking. Dinwiddie displayed as much again on Friday when he expressed to Colin Cowherd on FOX Sports’ “The Herd” he wouldn’t mind working more as a facilitator:
If you look back at my high school stats, I really wasn’t a big scorer. I actually passed the ball all the time. And then in college, I was very much a game manager, as well. So it’s kind of been a little bit different for me to be this high-scoring guy these past couple seasons … Looking ahead, with KD and Kyrie being the high scoring guys, I’d much rather be the guy that spreads the ball around and averages maybe 15 [points] and nine [assists] or 15 and 10 while they go get the 30. … I feel like the 21 points a game this year was a lot by necessity ’cause we needed that for us to win.

Cowherd was stunned by the response and questioned if he would’ve been able to explain himself like Dinwiddie at the age of 27.
