Spartans get shutout by Wolverines in worst loss in rivalry since 1947

It was ugly from the opening whistle

Michigan State was dominated by their in-state rival Michigan on Saturday, 49-0, losing for a second straight year to the Wolverines. The 49-point loss to the Wolverines was the worst in the rivalry since 1947.

The Wolverines scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions and four of their six first half drives to build a 28-0 lead at the break. Michigan State had only three first downs to 19 for the Wolverines in the first half.

Things didn’t get much better for the Spartans in the second half, throwing a 72-yard pick-six on their opening drive to put the final nail in their coffin. Michigan star quarterback J.J. McCarthy would throw one more touchdown to finish with a career-high four touchdown passes before getting pulled midway through the third quarter.

Michigan State was out gained  477 to 190 yards in the loss. Michigan State also committed a pair of turnovers to zero for the Wolverines

Michigan State will return to the field next Saturday in a road game at Minnesota. Kickoff between the Spartans and Golden Gophers is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
