Michigan State won the Great Lakes Invitational for the first time since 2009 when they defeated No. 4 Western Michigan on Monday, 3-1, securing the tournament victory.
With starting goaltender Trey Augustine with team USA for the world juniors tournament, the Spartans leaned on backup sophomore goalie Luca Di Pasquo to shoulder the load, and he did not disappoint.
Di Pasquo won the tournament’s MVP award after two stellar performances, shutting out Northern Michigan in the semifinal and only allowing one goal in the final. He made 45 saves on 46 shots over the two games in the tournament.
The Spartans are in good hands after Augustine departs.
