The college football season is already off the rails and it’s barely started. The South Carolina Gamecocks announced that they’ll be starting graduate assistant coach Zeb Noland for their season opener against Eastern Illinois to start the 2021 season.
Incumbent starter Luke Doty is going to miss the game with a foot injury, which opened the door for Noland to start the game. Even though he’s technically part of the Gamecocks’ coaching staff, he still has some college eligibility left over from his time playing for Iowa State and North Dakota State University.
According to The State, Noland beat out four other quarterbacks to get the nod for the season opener. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Doty gets back from injury, because Noland would be allowed to start the entire season if things go well for him against Eastern Illinois.
