Some Mets fans really need to relax and start laughing at themselves and their team

Lighten up, Mets fans.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

I’m guessing you’ve heard about how some members of the New York Mets have been giving thumbs downs after big hits and key plays at home games.

Players such as Javy Baez have explained that they’re doing it because if the fans are going to boo the players for playing poorly then the players are going to basically boo the fans when they play well.

And some – probably lots – of Mets fans are really mad about this because getting mad about dumb stuff is what everyone does these days, unfortunately.

I am not a Mets fan at all but I think the thumbs down bit is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in sports in a long time and I’d love to see it continue. Also, I agree with my pal Chris Korman – booing your team is fine. It means you care. But it’s also fine for the players to boo you, too, because they also care.

Those Mets fans who are upset or offended by this really need chill the you-know-what out and learn to laugh at themselves and the whole situation because it’s all so silly and goofy and awesome.

Here are some guys playing a kids game having a little bit of fun giving it back to their fans with some harmless thumbs that are pointed toward the ground.

What’s the harm in that!?

Have people really forgotten how to take things lightly and just giggle at stuff?

Sadly, the answer to that question seems to be a resounding yes. If you’ve ever been on Twitter – or any social media platform – then you know everything is an argument about everything and everyone hates each other. Less and less people, it seems, are able to laugh at themselves and not take things so seriously, which is a shame.

And I don’t want to hear how these Mets players are getting paid a lot of money to play a game and therefore should just take the boos for when they play poorly and go on about their business.

That’s a boring argument and one I have no time for. I do, however, have time for fun and laughing and loving something this is just so ridiculously out there.

Mets players gleefully giving thumbs downs while standing on a base after a big hit is the harmless type of fun that is right up my alley and I’d think it would be hilarious even if I was a fan of the team. Getting booed by your own players?

TREMENDOUS.

Keep it up, Mets players.

Lighten up, Mets fans.

Actually, lighten up lots of people. Stop getting upset over silly stuff and taking everything so darn personally.

Geez.
