The 2020 NBA draft is two days away and the Philadelphia 76ers have a lot of options to examine with their pick at 21. They can either make the pick at 21 and bring in a player who needs some development or they can trade the pick for a player to help win right now.
New President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has a tendency to make any big trades in order to get rid of draft picks for players who can help right away. He has been in Philadelphia for two weeks, officially, and he has a lot of work to do in this short amount of time.
All of that can make him a bit unpredictable in a time such as this one.
“It’s hard to say where exactly his head is and how he views those five picks,” said VP of Scouting Vince Rozman. “I think where I’m happy is our scouting staff was on the ready and once we got Daryl on board, I think we quickly were able to prepare him where we were on all of these guys. Houston didn’t have any, let alone, one up in the first round so our goal was to catch him up on these guys as quick as possible.”
The reason why the Houston Rockets do not have any picks in this draft is that Morey sent their picks to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Robert Covington deal. That means, he could absolutely trade this 21st pick on Wednesday in order to bring in a player who can help the Sixers right away.
Especially after dissecting Rozman’s initial quote. It is hard to tell what Morey is thinking right now. He could be coming in here and thinking he has to go get a guy right now who can help Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid right now.
“I think what you have to do is go through every option in any possible scenario with any of those picks so you’re prepared to make the right decision,” Rozman added. “When you’re on the clock or leading into the draft, I think we’re prepared to execute whichever one of those we see as best at the moment.”
One thing is for certain, it appears that this draft will be very entertaining for the Sixers and their fans. Morey is a guy who will certainly pull some strings and try and improve this roster right away to take advantage of the talent. [lawrence-related id=39147,39144,39130]
