Sixers veteran Danny Green not worried about offense, wants to teach

Philadelphia 76ers veteran Danny Green is not worried about his offense as he looks to teach the youngsters.

When the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Danny Green from the Oklahoma City Thunder back in November, they did so in order to bring in more shooting for their offense. The 11-year veteran is a career 40% shooter from deep and he makes a lot of sense for their offense.

Through three games, Green is struggling with his shot shooting just 2-for-11 from deep, but his offense is going to come. He has not been with the Sixers for a full month yet and he is a guy who is going to get rolling pretty soon.

The Sixers are not going to run plays for him, because that isn’t how Green operates. He is a guy who will get his shots within the flow of the offense. The important part is, he will get going at some point and he is here to teach the younger guys on the roster.

“That’s not usually conversations I’ve had with any coach,” said Green. “I’m not really looked at as an offensive threat or a guy to get offensive sets for. I usually get my shots off of ball movement. Right now we’re focused on my involvement with helping teach these guys and understanding the offense and the defense so that’s where my involvement comes.”

Philadelphia’s offense will be coming from their star duo of Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid while Tobias Harris will obviously be involved as well. Then, the team has to involve Seth Curry as well so Green’s role right now is to provide tough defense as well as teaching these younger guys. He has a ton of experience in the NBA and he has three titles to show for it so all of that will be helpful for this group.

“That’s where my involvement comes,” Green explained. “On the defensive end of the floor and my talking, my teaching, my help, helping those young guys learn, but the offense will come later on. Right now, I’m trying to figure out Tobias, Joel, keeping them involved, Ben. Obviously, Seth is a great shooter as well.”

Green did take six 3s in the team’s win over the New York Knicks over the weekend and he did six shots in the team’s season opener. He only took two shots against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday where the team committed 21 turnovers and therefore, offered little chance for Green.

“I know that when we have good ball movement, it results in guys like myself getting those type of shots like we had in New York,” he added. “I got a good amount of attempts, but in those other couple games there’s not going to be many looks if we don’t move the ball, we don’t take care of it.”

As long as the team moves the ball with precision as they did against the Knicks, then Green will become a focal point on offense. On the flip side, he will also not be a guy to turn down any extra shots if it were to be drawn up that way.

“If we take care of it first and not turn it over, that’s how we get good looks, but I’ll worry about that later,” he finished. “I’ve never been one of those guys who worry about shots. Doc, you’ll have to talk to him about that and if he wants me to get more shots, he would be my guest.”

The Sixers will take on the Toronto Raptors at 7:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
