Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid entered Friday’s matchup with the Boston Celtics on a pretty impressive streak. The 7-foot big man was on a roll scoring 30+ points in eight consecutive games tying Allen Iverson and Wilt Chamberlain for the longest such streak in franchise history.
In Friday’s 111-99 win over the Celtics, Embiid’s streak ended as he scored 25 points on 7-for-15 shooting with 13 rebounds and six assists in the victory. The big fella did a lot out on the floor in order for Philadelphia to get the job done and he didn’t need to score 30 as he got help from his teammates.
Tyrese Maxey had 23 points and Seth Curry and Tobias Harris had 17 points each in support of Embiid. Even though he could not keep the streak going, it was still an impressive run for the big fella.
“It’s great,” said Embiid. “Those are legends. I’m surprised Wilt didn’t do it for more than eight times. He probably did and maybe it wasn’t just documented, but it’s great. That wasn’t my focus especially after that last game. We just played so bad overall offensively and defensively. The main focus coming into tonight was getting the win and we got the win and that’s what I’m happy about it.”
Embiid did have 31 points on Wednesday to push the streak to eight, but they had a bad loss to the Charlotte Hornets at home. That was the focus for him on Friday rather than looking to set the record.
“I saw it everywhere,” he added. “I was aware of it, but I was really not chasing it. In that fourth quarter, I just kept making plays and I don’t think tried to force-feed and try to get shots up. If guys were on me, I made the right plays.”
Embiid and the Sixers will now hit the road again when they take on the Miami Heat on Saturday for the second night of a back-to-back.
