Sixers rookie Tyrese Maxey assesses his first NBA season thus far

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Tyrese Maxey gives his thoughts on his first season in the league so far.

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Tyrese Maxey has had an up and down rookie season at the NBA level. He has had games in which he has looked terrific, such as scoring 39 points against the Denver Nuggets in January, and he has had stretches where he has not played.

It all comes with being a rookie on a very good team with a lot of proven players ahead of him on the roster. In his situation, he has to do what the team asks of him and he has done so to the best of his ability.

“There’s highs and lows,” said Maxey. “Never get too high, never get too low, and that’s the thing that has to stick with you throughout your career, especially during the rookie season.”

For the season, he is averaging 7.4 points and 1.5 assists while shooting 45.9% from the floor in 41 games. Those are solid numbers for someone so young trying to learn the NBA ropes at this early stage of his career, but the reason his playing time has been so uneven is due to rookie growing pains.

(function (d, s, n) {
var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
js = d.createElement(s);
js.className = n;
js.src = “//player.ex.co/player/d8b9c085-4226-44f1-8495-36ad4e2aa62d”;
fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);
}(document, ‘script’, ‘exco-player’));

There are times he will look for his shot much more often than run the offense, and that is what will have to improve as his career goes on. Luckily for him, he is on a roster that has many proven veterans and the team is sitting at the top of the East. This is all a good experience for him.

“It’s going great,” Maxey added. “Tied for No. 1 in the East, playing on a championship contender, going out there and competing, and helping my team whether it’s on the floor, whether it’s being the biggest cheerleader. I’m just gonna keep going.”

The Sixers will count on Maxey to continue playing his role as the season goes on and into the playoffs. He is a good fit to have on this roster with all of the resources he has at his fingertips.
