Sixers receive an overall A grade for their offseason moves so far

The Philadelphia 76ers have received an A for their offseason moves so far in 2022.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been quite busy thus far in the offseason. They signed three free agents and executed a draft night trade to retool the roster around Joel Embiid and James Harden. The Sixers will also eventually sign Harden to an extension to have their title core.

The Sixers signed PJ Tucker, Danuel House Jr. and Trevelin Queen in free agency, and they traded Danny Green and their pick on draft night to the Memphis Grizzlies to acquire De’Anthony Melton. The idea is to put more depth and shooting around the two stars.

Bleacher Report recently put together offseason grades for all 30 teams and the Sixers have received an A for their moves in the offseason so far:

Those inclined to hand-wring might feel uneasy about guaranteeing three years and $33 million for the 37-year-old Tucker, but House’s comparatively modest two-year, $8.4 million agreement balances things out. Plus, the Sixers are in full win-now mode with what’s left of James Harden and the uncertain remainder of Joel Embiid’s prime. If Tucker plays a major role in a title run this season, Philly won’t care if he’s a negative asset at some point later in his new deal.

Plus, Tucker and trade acquisition Melton dramatically up the 76ers’ toughness level. Both are rugged defenders who can also stretch the floor with their shooting, making them game-closing options against the toughest matchups.

Of course, this offseason isn’t over just yet. The Sixers still need to figure out the Harden extension. At the moment, president Daryl Morey has done a great job of using his resources to put the Sixers in a solid position.
