The Philadelphia 76ers had a chance down 102-100 with 18.3 seconds left on Wednesday against the Washington Wizards. Tobias Harris grabbed a rebound off a Spencer Dinwiddie miss and they were out and running.
Harris had a pass ahead to Tyrese Maxey, but he decided to dribble instead and he threw a turnaround pass to Joel Embiid. It looked like it was a helter-skelter possession all-around.
“I don’t think it was there, personally,” coach Doc Rivers said of the potential look-ahead pass to Maxey. “I thought it was a chance, but it would’ve been a narrow gap.”
The big fella drove, but he was blocked by Kyle Kuzma and that sealed it in a 106-103 loss to the Wizards at home. Embiid looked like he was fouled, but there was no call as Washington was able to escape.
“We had a timeout and I saw when Joel caught it, I saw that he was about to drive,” said Rivers. “I liked the angle. I thought he may have gotten fouled and it was a game of foul calls. You just felt like every play there was a foul called tonight and then the biggest play of the game, there was no foul called. It is what it is.”
Embiid did not speak after the game so he could not give his viewpoint of what happened.
As far as the potential pass from Harris is concerned, Maxey isn’t exactly sure what happened. He did not have a chance to watch the replay.
“I don’t remember exactly what happened, yet,” said Maxey. “I haven’t really watched it, yet, but if he saw me, he would’ve passed it to me. If he didn’t, I don’t know, I don’t really—but we got a good shot. Joel got a shot at the rim and we’ll live with that shot any day of the week.”
Maxey then added that he did not see what happened when Embiid drove to the basket either. All he knew was he had to get back on defense.
“I didn’t really see it, honestly,” Maxey added. “I was kinda watching the ball and watching if he was gonna make or not and whether I had to get back on defense or not. Like I said, we’ll live with that shot from our best player and him driving to the hole and getting an easy one.”
