Sixers history: Allen Iverson accepts MVP trophy, drops 52 in Game 5

On this day in Philadelphia 76ers history, Allen Iverson accepted his MVP trophy and scored 52 points against the Toronto Raptors.

With the NBA in an indefinite hiatus due to COVID-19, we continue our day-by-day look back at the history of the Philadelphia 76ers. We continue down our path into Sixers history every day as we look to fill the void left by the absence of basketball.

This edition of Sixers history takes us back to 2001. Allen Iverson had just been named MVP of the 2000-01 season the day before and his team was getting set to take on the Toronto Raptors in Game 5 of their semifinals series. Iverson accepted the MVP trophy before the game and he then delivered a huge performance to take a 3-2 lead in the series

May 16, 2001

Philadelphia had just won Game 4 on the road to even the series at 2 before things shifted back to the First Union Center. Toronto had been putting up a big fight led by Vince Carter and a strong cast of supporting players while Iverson had to mostly do a lot of the heavy lifting on his own offensively.

That was no problem for The Answer as he dropped a cool 52 points on 21-for-32 shooting with seven assists in a 121-88 win at home. It was another dominant performance for him and he did a terrific job of scoring efficiently and putting the team on his back. It was just another day at the office for Iverson.

Philadelphia now had control of this series. The real challenge will be them heading to Canada for Game 6 and closing this thing out. [lawrence-related id=31096,31088,31078]
