Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey praises Sam Cassell, Doc Rivers for development

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey gives credit to Sam Cassell and Doc Rivers for his development.

Philadelphia 76ers second-year guard Tyrese Maxey is continuing to develop as a player during the 2021-22 season. With the Ben Simmon situation continuing, the Sixers are hoping to develop the young guard out of Kentucky to become their next starting point guard.

It is a lot to ask of a young man, but with former point guards Sam Cassell and Doc Rivers in Maxey’s ear, he is in a good position.

Cassell and Rivers were in his ear multiple times during Thursday’s win over the Detroit Pistons. Plenty of times when Maxey was going over to the bench, either Cassell or Rivers grabbed him to talk or give instruction.

“I appreciate Sam because think about that, in my opinion, Sam is a Hall of Fame point guard.,” said Maxey. “To have someone like that in your ear helping you and coaching you every step of the way, the only thing it can do is be grateful and it’s gonna help you. It’s not gonna harm you at all because, at the end of the day, he just wants what’s best for us, best for our team, best for me.”

Considering how young Maxey is, Rivers is not trying to overload him with so much information. At the same time, he wants his young guard to be prepared for every situation.

“Probably too many point guards in that huddle,” Rivers laughed. “We give him information; we load him up. We try not to overload him, overall, but it’s been good. Good communication.”

The big thing is, the Sixers want Maxey playing with aggressiveness. Much like how Rivers preaches about Tobias Harris, they want Maxey to make quick and decisive decisions. They want him to attack as much as they can and that’s the message every time.

“I think the biggest thing is doing things with a purpose,” Maxey finished. “No wasted movements, getting to my spot, getting into the paint to find others, setting up plays, different things like that. Doing everything with a purpose. No wasted movements. That’s the big thing (Sam’s) always talking about and Doc as well.”
