This edition is focused on a real sharpshooter who had his season cut short after just 14 games due to a right foot injury. With the Sixers needing shooting desperately, this prospect should receive a serious look from general manager Elton Brand and company.
Aaron Nesmith, Vanderbilt
This kid has the perfect package that the Sixers need right now. He shot a ridiculous 52.2% from deep on 8.2 attempts per game and he was leading the SEC in scoring at 23.0 points per game before the injury. He does a terrific job of moving off screens and getting to the open spot for his shot, almost like JJ Redick, and his shot is so pure. He is not someone who can create for himself, but he’d be an excellent floor spacer.
On the defensive end, he has a good IQ and he has a real understanding of team defense. He is not a terrific defender like Matisse Thybulle for example, but he is a guy who can use his body and bother his opponent. He isn’t a pure 3-and-D guy, but for Philadelphia, it is all about shooting at the moment.
Over at our sister site, Rookie Wire has Nesmith going 18th overall to the Dallas Mavericks, but he could drop due to the injury.
The Mavericks currently average the second-most 3-point attempts per game (41.5) in the NBA. With the way that Luka Doncic can create space and spread the floor for teammates, Dallas needs the best shooters in order to become a championship contender. Vanderbilt’s Aaron Nesmith is likely the best in this class, shooting 52.2% from 3-point range on the season. Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse played for the Mavericks from 2004 until 2009 and likely can put in a good word with the organization.
The Sixers need more shooting and there is no getting around that. Furkan Korkmaz has been a terrific option off the bench this season and that’s great, but it can’t just be him. Glenn Robinson III has been a disappointment since his arrival as has Alec Burks and they are both free agents after the season. Philadelphia cannot let Nesmith slide past them if he is there at 22. They should be thanking their lucky stars if he is there. [lawrence-related id=29329,29321,29307]
