The Philadelphia 76ers have a lot more important matters to attend to as they head into the final 16 games of the NBA season. They have the No. 1 seed in the East in their sights and visions of the Larry O’Brien trophy dancing in their heads.
However, it also does not hurt to look to the offseason and discuss what the team needs to add for the future.
One of those needs is depth at the big man spots. The Sixers began the season with four centers on the roster, but they traded two of them in the George Hill deal back on March 25. Considering how important it is for Joel Embiid to be healthy for the playoffs every season, Philadelphia could use more than just one backup big man to Embiid.
In a mock draft performed by CBS Sports, the Sixers are selecting North Carolina freshman Day’Ron Sharpe:
Sharpe is more of a traditional big man than modern-day big. He doesn’t shoot 3s and is pretty limited offensively overall. But in bursts, he made nice reads as a passer and has a limitless motor that will allow him to excel on the boards in the NBA. There’s a lot of untapped potential here, with his skill set fitting a need for Philly as Joel Embiid’s backup.
As mentioned, Sharpe is not a guy who will dazzle with his offensive production, but he averaged 9.5 points and 7.6 rebounds with the Tar Heels. The Sixers have a solid roster up and down, but they really need somebody who can provide a backup plan on nights Embiid can’t go.
