As the Philadelphia 76ers head into the 2021 offseason, there are some issues that the team needs to address. The biggest one is obviously the Ben Simmons question as they try to figure out what to do there, but another issue is their depth at the big man’s spot.
Philadelphia made a trade at the deadline when they sent Tony Bradley to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for George Hill and they also sent Vincent Poirier to the New York Knicks. With that move, the Sixers only had Dwight Howard to backup Joel Embiid.
In games where Embiid could not go, the Sixers had to rely on Mike Scott to start in his place because the fit with Howard and Simmons was awkward. They missed Bradley in those games after he was playing well in the stretch leading up to the deadline.
With the 28th pick in the draft, they could go a route in order to fix this as they could take a big man there. In a mock draft performed by CBS Sports, they have the Sixers selecting Western Kentucky center Charles Bassey:
Philly needs to find an answer at its backup center spot. I can think of no better way to complement the NBA’s most dominant interior force in Joel Embiid than with one of college’s most physically imposing bigs in Charles Bassey. Coming off a knee injury, Bassey destroyed Conference USA last season and he has made significant strides as a rebounder and shot-blocker. He might struggle defending in space but there’s immense value for a big who can do what he does.
Bassey averaged 17.6 points and 11.6 rebounds along with 3.1 blocks on his way to winning Conference-USA Player of the Year as a junior. The Sixers could go another route, like going after a playmaker from the perimeter, but Bassey is a solid choice for them at 28.
