The free agency period continues to inch a bit closer as the Philadelphia 76ers look to continue to improve their team with the little assets that they have right now.
In terms of free agency, the Sixers have roughly $6 million to spend. This is due to the fact that they handed out a lot of expensive deals in the 2019 offseason, but there are a few options out there that can help the team and fit in their price range.
The Sixers could use a cheap option as a backup point guard who can shoot it well from deep, add some scoring punch, and then also run the offense well. One guy who fits those needs is Jeff Teague who just finished up a season playing for both the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Atlanta Hawks by averaging 10.9 points and 5.2 assists while shooting 36.8% from deep.
The Athletic’s John Hollinger wrote this on Teague’s free agency prospects:
Teague is 32 and his best days are definitely in the rear-view mirror. Atlanta hoped he would solve its backup point guard woes after a midseason trade from Minnesota, but he wasn’t the answer. Yet we also have to allow for his longer-term track record; he was a halfway decent player just a year earlier and isn’t so old as to make a rebound out of the question. More likely, he’s strictly a discount option for depth.
Teague is a guy who has already made his money in this league, he has an All-Star appearance under his belt, and he has made the playoffs plenty of times. At this point, he is most likely willing to sign a cheap deal in order to seriously contend for an NBA title. Philadelphia would offer him that opportunity to do so.
