Recruiting for Kentucky’s men’s basketball team is always big news. Every prospect is examined and discussed in detail before they’ve played a game. Most are celebrities before they’ve set foot on the court. It’s a constant whirlwind of buzz when John Calipari is on the recruiting trail.
For the most part, the women’s team’s recruiting isn’t as talked about, but in one instance, it may get there. Oumou Thiero is only a Sophomore in high school, but Kentucky fans may get to know her very well by the time she’s ready to hit the college court. She got an early preview over the weekend, when she visited the UK campus.
Thiero is a very good high school player. She’s averaging 19 points and 14 rebounds, and only figures to get better. At 6’4″ already, she will likely wind up even taller, and she is very skilled as well. Oh, and she’s also the sister of current Wildcat Adou Thiero.
The elder Thiero is averaging 7.5 points per game for the current Wildcats squad. He’s also averaging 5 rebounds, and has brought a much-needed toughness to the team.
It will be a few years before the younger Thiero has to pick a college, and nobody knows if her brother will influence her decision. If she hits the potential she has, though, Kentucky fans will be hoping he talks her into coming to Lexington.
