Since Cleveland failed to make the playoffs, and is thus a lottery team, Indiana will not receive the Cavaliers’ 2022 lottery-protected first-round pick — 16th or 17th overall — which was acquired in a deal for Caris LeVert at the February trade deadline. The trade, however, is not over. The cycle repeats itself next season with Indiana receiving Cleveland’s 2023 first-round pick if the Cavs reach the playoffs. The catch next year, though, is if Cleveland misses the playoffs for a second straight season, then its 2023 lottery-protected first-round pick gets converted and sent to the Pacers as a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick via the Lakers that the Cavaliers currently own.
