“The Grit Factory” will be graduating both of their starting safeties after the upcoming Las Vegas Bowl.
This leaves the door open for a highly competitive position battle for both starting safety spots throughout the spring and fall – with no shortage of suitors.
One would presume that John Torchio has the inside track on one of those starting spots, given the amount of snaps he’s already logged this season.
For the other starting spot, all eyes will be on safety Hunter Wohler – eagerly anticipating a year two jump into a more prominent role in Jim Leonhard’s defense.
Wohler is a former four-star recruit from Muskego, Wisconsin. He chose Wisconsin despite an extensive offer list that included the likes of Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Wohler is the kind of player that is more than capable of coming down and helping in run support – while also having the versatility to play deep due to his speed and standout ball skills for the position.

Due to a season ending injury to Collin Wilder, Wohler was recently promoted into the two deep at safety ahead of the bowl game against Arizona State.
The coaching staff has consistently sung his praises this season, citing his desire to learn and the better understand the why’s of the defensive system.
Hunter Wohler has terrific instincts, work ethic, and natural ability – so it’s entirely possible that he could make the jump from the two deep to starting at safety in 2022.
As a true freshman, Wohler has contributed on special teams – appearing in all 12 games. In total, Wohler has accumulated 16 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and a pass deflection.
With expanded opportunities, and a full year in the program, I wouldn’t be shocked if Hunter Wohler earns a starting spot in 2022 and never looks back.
