Should Texas A&M pursue former Texas WR Johntay Cook II?

Should Mike Elko take a chance on WR Johntay Cook?

On Thursday morning, the shocking news that wide receiver Johntay Cook II had departed the Texas Longhorns‘ football program made the headlines, as the once highly touted prospect is back on the market after just two seasons in Austin (TX).

Based on what we know, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian released a statement hours after Cook’s departure:

“We have nothing but respect for he and his family,” Sarkisian stated. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

While this is simply “coach speak,” the primary reason for Cook’s exit may not be released to the public, but as things stand, he is still one of the more talented receivers now in the transfer portal with more than two seasons of eligibility remaining.

As a Top 40-ranked prospect in the 2022 recruiting cycle (247Sports), Cook’s twitchy athleticism, downfield speed, and notable route running was buried on the Longhorns deep WR depth chart, as his snaps began to decrease every week, finishing his Texas career with 16 receptions, 273 yards and two touchdowns.

Whatever happens next, should Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko pursue Cook out of the portal? This obviously depends on the circumstances of his departure, but nevertheless, Cook’s skillset may be too good to pass up.

It’s not like Johntay Cook isn’t familiar with College Station, taking several visits during the 2022 offseason while developing a budding rivalry with former Texas A&M WR Evan Stewart, who transferred to Oregon last offseason.

After missing out on several 2025 receiver prospects, including 4-star CJ Wiley, Elko and his staff will need to attack the portal immediately after the season for veteral wide receivers, which could include Cooks.
