The San Antonio Spurs have some choices to make starting next season as they prepare for a new future led by rookie Victor Wembanyama. Obviously, developing him to be the best he can be should take top priority, but beyond that, the Spurs need to ensure that the core around him is growing as well.
Guys like Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan have a chance to blossom into key players, maybe even stars, alongside Wembanyama, but the Spurs also have some other youngsters worth developing. One intriguing young player who could grow into a solid player is Blake Wesley, who will be entering his second year.
While exploring the Spurs’ starting point guard options for the upcoming season, Jesus Gomez of Pounding the Rock mentioned the possibility of rolling out Wesley as a starter to help kickstart his development.
“If the Spurs were a more traditional rebuilding team, giving Wesley the starting job and as many minutes as possible despite his struggles as a rookie would be easy to advocate for,” Gomez wrote. “He’s only 20 years old, he has elite quickness and he has good size and wingspan for the position. Sure, he’s out of control most of the time and his length hasn’t translated into defensive disruptiveness yet, but investing in his development is more important than getting immediate contributions. By the time his rookie contract is about to end, the front office will need to know if he’s a part of the core or just another late first-rounder that didn’t pan out and the best way to do that is to just throw him into the deep water and see if he can swim. Again, it’s what rebuilding teams in the first stages tend to do.”
Gomez also noted that Tre Jones is the clear choice to start, Cameron Payne could be an intriguing option, and Devonte’ Graham would be a wild card choice.
What do you think of Wesley?
