Shooting guard RJ Smith verbally commits to bolster Boyle’s Buffs

CU men’s basketball received a verbal commitment from RJ Smith, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from California

RJ Smith is the newest member of the herd.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard announced his commitment to Tad Boyle and company on Thursday via Twitter and Instagram.

The Southern California native is not yet rated on 247Sports or Rivals.

Smith holds six offers according to 247Sports and Colorado is the lone high-major program that reached out with an offer. Pepperdine, San Diego, New Mexico and Portland were the other schools he considered in his top five.

He visited Boulder the week of Sept. 5, when CU had its season-opening football game against Northern Colorado. His experience was presumably enough to give the CU coaching staff his word.

Smith is a two-time first-team All-Area selection for the Pasadena area. He is known for his silky smooth three-point stroke.

He played with Prodigy Athletic, based in Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.), this past summer in AAU.

Smith is the second 2022 hoops commit for the CU Buffs. The other one is four-star center Joe Hurlburt from North Dakota.

After a recruiting class that finished top 10 in the nation and No. 1 in the Pac-12 according to 247Sports last year, Boyle continues to reload.
