Shin Megami Tensei 5 sells more than 1 million copies

The hardcore dungeon-crawling series has its first mainstream hit.

It looks like Shin Megami Tensei isn’t a niche series anymore, as the latest entry is now a mainstream hit.

On Sunday, Atlus announced that Shin Megami Tensei 5 has sold more than 1 million copies worldwide since its launch last November. That figure includes physical copies and digital editions on the eShop.

While selling that amount in roughly five months may not sound impressive compared to sale figures for Elden Ring or Ghost of Tsushima, it’s an incredible achievement for something like Shin Megami Tensei 5. Despite that the series has been around since 1992, Shin Megami Tensei has never achieved this sort of success before — aside from spinoffs like Persona 5 doing well

Shin Megami Tensei 5 character designer Masayuki Doi drew a gorgeous illustration of the (nameless) protagonist to celebrate.

There’s no doubt that the sheer volume of Nintendo Switch consoles out there helps games like Shin Megami Tensei 5 reach unprecedented levels of success. Even first-party franchises like Mario Kart and Animal Crossing are smashing records set on previous Nintendo consoles.
