Shaquille O’Neal played three seasons at Lousiana State University from 1989 to 1992 and had his No. 33 retired by the program after becoming the National Player of the Year and two-time consensus All-American.

The school also honored O’Neal by erecting a 900-pound bronze statue outside of the practice facility on the north end of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. O’Neal can be seen dunking the basketball in the statue, which was unveiled in 2011.

His oldest son, Shareef, will be transferring to LSU this year after playing one season at UCLA. Shareef decided to stop by the statue on Friday and pay homage to his father and the success he saw on campus.

The crew on the set of the “NBA on TNT” on Friday night showed Shareef’s photos during halftime of Game 3 between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. Shaq, who was working during the broadcast, saw them for the first time and said, “Hey, son. Love you, buddy!”
