Could a trade for veteran sharpshooter JJ Redick be in the works for the Boston Celtics?
According to The Athletic’s resident NBA insider Shams Charania, the Celtics are indeed one of three teams in the league’s northeastern corridor with interest in potentially dealing for the New Orleans Pelicans guard, along with the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, Redick’s last team before signing with the Pels in 2019. While the Nets may well have a leg up in terms of potentially being the most desirable landing spot for the former Sixer given his family lives in Brooklyn, Boston may be the best choice if New Orleans wants to shed some or all of Redick’s $13.1 million expiring deal.

With a $28.5 million trade exception — the largest in NBA history — at their disposal, only Boston can add cap relief along with draft assets and young talent into the mix if they want to get serious about dealing for the Virginia native.
But it’s unclear if the team would be interested in using so much of that exception on a player who may not be on their roster next season — or who has shot a career-low 29.8% from 3-point range this season.
The idea of Redick in green and white holds obvious appeal, but it may not be worth the squeeze if the player they get back is more or less the player he’s been with the Pels.
