The Philadelphia 76ers are going through a transition at the point guard spot.
Given the team wants to bring Ben Simmons back while he wants a trade and isn’t playing, Simmons is out. That means the guy right now is young Tyrese Maxey, who has been the starter to begin the season.
Maxey had 15 points on 7-for-17 shooting in Friday’s loss to the Brooklyn Nets and he even had a couple of nice defensive plays, which is an encouraging sign.
Seth Curry, who had 23 points, has been happy with Maxey to begin the season. He sees signs of development.
“He’s been solid,” he stated. “Playing hardball both ends of the floor, good activity defensively and being aggressive offensively, getting into the paint, making plays, playing the game better seeing the floor. It’s good progress from him.”
Maxey will continue to be a work in progress. He is only in his second season, and he has to take on a new role for the team on the offensive end of the floor. He has to worry not only about his scoring, but also running the offense. That is something he is still working on.
The good thing for Maxey is he has people such as Curry and Danny Green, as well as coach Doc Rivers, to help him along the way.
“Seth is great,” Maxey said during the preseason. “He’s just great overall, and he can kind of play with anybody because of the space and the way he shoots the ball, the way he puts the ball on the floor, the way he can play in pick-and-roll so it’s helped me when I’m on that team. He’s helped me a lot, and I really appreciate him and all the vets. They just help all of us go through this transition.”
Maxey continues his transition on Sunday when the team takes on the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road.
