Series Recap: Baseball – Texas A&M vs Northern Kentucky

Aggie Baseball extends win streak to 7 with series sweep of Northern Kentucky

The No 15 Aggies (12-4) swept Northern Kentucky over the weekend. Games one and two were won with little resistance, however, game three was a battle to the end. Their streak has now been extended to seven games heading to Houston for a midweek showdown against UH.

game one recap

When a team scores eight runs, common thought is it happened over the course of a game. This was not the case in game one as the Aggies scored all eight runs in the second inning. Now, bear with me while we go over the highlights.

The first run was an RBI double by Ryan Targac scoring Austin Bost from second followed by a single by Kaeden Kent placing batters on first and third. Jordan Thompson’s single would see Targac across the plate, and Jace LaViolette would smack an RBI double into center field putting the Aggies up 3-0. An RBI single off the bat of JD Gregson scored Thompson to extend the lead by one. After another single and a walk, the bases were loaded for Austin Bost with two outs. He also provided a base hit scoring Gregson, then the NKU pitcher hit Tragac with a pitch with the bases loaded putting the Aggies a 6-0.

Finally, for the last two runs of the inning, Kent got his second hit resulting in a two-run RBI single placing Texas A&M ahead 8-0 very early in the game. That lead would be good enough to hold the rest of the game even as the Aggie bats went cold. NKU would get a lone run in the top of the eight to avoid the goose egg but that was it.

Final Score: Aggies 8, Norsemen 1 – W: Dettmer, Nathan (1-1); L: Echeman, Kaden (0-1); S: Sexton, Ty (1)

game two recap

Saturday would be an early night for the Aggies as they run rule the Norsemen with ease. They amassed 13 hits through 6 innings before Jaren Warwick closed out the game with consecutive strikeouts.

Once again Texas A&M started off the game with early scores. Ryan Targac went yard to center field for the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. NKU would get a homerun at the top of the third for their only run of the night. However Northern Kentucky would cancel out their own run with a wild pitch allowing Hunter Haas to score and a from third based in a challenged call.

In the bottom of the 4th the Aggies added seven runs on five hits. The highlight of the inning was the second home run of the game by Targac. Prior to the home run Bost had an RBI single that scored Haas and put him on second base advancing Moss to third. That set up Tragac’s three-run home run over the right field fence.

Jace LaViolette joined Targac by adding the last two insurance runs with a two RBI homerun to right field. Up 12-1 Warwick entered the game but got off to a less than stellar start giving up a base hit and a wild pitch. He would settle down and retire the final two batters.

Final Score: Aggies 12, Norsemen 1 – W: Wansing, Troy (2-1); L: Gerl, Ben (1-2)

game Three recap

The third game was easily the most competitive of the series. While leading early, Texas A&M would fall behind after the top of the fifth inning. However, the Maroon and White scored in each of the final four innings and kept NKU scoreless across that same time.

Multiple base hits see the Aggies cross the plate three times for an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Northern Kentucky would get their first lead of the series with a four run fourth inning and a three run fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead halfway through the game. In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies would slowly start chipping away at the score.

With runners on second and third, Thompson hit a single through the left side scoring both runner in scoring position to cut the lead by two. NKU’s next three batters all strikeout and the Aggies put on the board in the bottom of the sixth pulling them with in one score.

In the seventh Texas A&M finally pulls ahead off a wild pitch scoring Thompson followed by Hank Bard sac fly scoring Kent. The top of the eighth is another quick one for the Norsemen and the Aggies put two more on the board on a fielding error and a walk.

A tense ninth inning came down to the Norseman having the tying run on at the plate, but it would fall into the Aggies favor with the batter grounding out to the second baseman to end the game.

Final Score: Aggies 10, Norsemen 7 – W: Johnston, Will (1-0); L: Lopez, Matthew (1-1)

The Aggies will travel to Houston. on March 14 at 6:30pm where they will take on the University of Houston.
