Selfless CU Buffs make quick work of Grambling State

Colorado played an excellent brand of team basketball in a blowout win over Grambling State

Head coach Tad Boyle’s Buffs are playing an entertaining brand of basketball early on.

Hosting a Grambling State team that beat Colorado last season, the Buffs tallied 28 assists on over 55% shooting in a 95-63 blowout of the Tigers Friday evening. The 28 assists marked the program’s most in a single game since 2005.

Colorado is now 2-0 following a pair of convincing wins to start the 2023-24 campaign.

As you’d like to see, Colorado’s two primary point guards, KJ Simpson and Julian Hammond III, were the leading assist-getters. Simpson dished out a career-high eight while Hammond tied his career-best of six. Center Eddie Lampkin Jr, who was starting in place of the banged-up Cody Williams, also had three.

“Team-wise, that’s how you win basketball games,” Lampkin said. “You can’t win being selfish.”

After a slow first half on Monday against Towson, forward Tristan da Silva led the Buffs with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. J’Vonne Hadley was right behind with 17 points, seven of which came from the charity stripe.

Boyle was quick to praise Hadley following the win.

“I love everything about his game and the way he’s playing,” Boyle said. “Hopefully, our young guys can see that and incorporate that into their game, because he’s special.”

Defensively, Colorado held Grambling State to 23.1% shooting in the first half but allowed the Tigers to go 53.6% after the break.

Colorado hosts Milwaukee next on Tuesday at 7 p.m. MT.
