Sega looks set to announce a new Sonic game this week

Everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog is making some big plays on social media.

If you’re the kind of person who knows that Knuckles is actually an echidna, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be excited about the prospect of Sega announcing a brand-new Sonic the Hedgehog game this week. Or maybe you just like to go fast. Either way, everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog is making some big plays on social media.

Aside from spin-offs and remakes, it’s been quite a while since the Blue Blur set off on a new adventure. 2017 saw the launch of both Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, which were 2D and 3D platformers, respectively, and we’ve heard rumors about a mysterious untitled project dubbed Sonic Frontiers ever since 2019. Aside from that though, things have been pretty quiet.

That all changed yesterday when the official Sonic Twitter account publicly asked The Game Awards presenter Geoff Keighley about whether or not the world’s fastest hedgehog was eligible for an invite.

Keighley initially responded by jokingly stating that the Sonic account doesn’t follow him back, at which point the Sega social media team confirmed that it had, in fact, received an extra invite. Given that the series’ upcoming title was briefly shown during Sonic Central earlier this year, it looks like Big Blue and the crew are finally gearing up for their highly anticipated return.

We here at For The Win can personally corroborate the likelihood of this based on our recent interview with Keighley himself. On top of confirming that there are “four or five” games on the scale of Elden Ring at the show, the presenter revealed that there are another “six or ten” games that people don’t even know exist.

In the case of Sonic, the former is more indicative of an upcoming reveal. On top of the Twitter teasing, we already know that the name Sonic Frontiers was trademarked in November and officially registered as a domain earlier this week. The same eagle-eyed Redditors who spotted this also noticed that the Steam page for Sonic was updated to suggest the series comprises 35 games as opposed to 34, implying an imminent reveal.

What’s more, a report from VGC states that the official registration corroborates previous claims that Sonic Frontiers – or whatever it ends up being called – will be an open-world title in the vein of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Hopefully, we’ll know once and for all after The Game Awards airs this Thursday, Dec. 9.

In related news, it seems The Game Awards is going big on promoting The Matrix Resurrections. Both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be in attendance, while the mysterious new The Matrix Awakens project will be debuted and subsequently launched for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Mostly we’re just hoping for Dragon Age 4, though…
