It’s no secret that USC Trojans quarterback Kedon Slovis was among college football’s most impressive stories in 2019.
A true freshman who was expected to serve as backup to JT Daniels, Slovis took over as the starter early in the season and excelled, throwing for 3,502 yards and 30 touchdowns with an outstanding 71.9% completion rate.
Slovis is now tabbed as the next great Trojans quarterback, and is already on the Davey O’Brien Award watch list, given to the nation’s best quarterback.
The folks at Pro Football Focus trotted out a list of the most valuable true freshmen in all of college football last season, using their WAA (Wins Above Average) formula.
Slovis slotted in as the fifth most valuable true freshman last season, behind LSU cornerback Derek Stingley, North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell, UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Georgia wide receiver George Pickens.

There’s little doubt the ability to gauge value across positions is tough, especially when it comes to factoring in how important teammates are to an individual’s success, but Slovis was clearly among the best newcomers to the college football landscape in 2019 – and he’s primed to break out even more in 2020.
