Notre Dame will face Ohio State with a national championship on the line next week. If Notre Dame wins, it’ll be the Irish’s first national title since 1988.
Current LSU head coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] had a lengthy stint at the helm of the Notre Dame program. Before this season, Notre Dame’s last title appearance was under Kelly in 2012. Kelly and Notre Dame fell short to a loaded Alabama team.
CBS Sports spoke to Kelly at the coach’s convention, and Kelly offered his thoughts on this year’s title game.
“I’m happy for all those guys, I pull for them. A lot of the guys there that are on both sides of the ball, I recruited. Obviously, I want to see those guys win it all, and I think they’re in a great position,” Kelly told CBS,
Kelly pulling for Notre Dame should come as no surprise. He was the one who hired Marcus Freeman as defensive coordinator in 2021. And Notre Dame OC Mike Denbrock worked under Kelly at LSU in 2023, building the most explosive unit in the country and helping Jayden Daniels win the Heisman.
Kelly won 113 games in 12 years at Notre Dame. Along with the championship appearance, Notre Dame made two playoffs under Kelly’s watch.
