See the historic moment Alyssa Nakken became the first woman to coach on field in a regular-season MLB game

History was made.

Alyssa Nakken made some history on Tuesday night thanks to an ejection.

The San Francisco Giants assistant coach was asked to coach first base after Antoan Richardson was ejected, and so when she trotted out on the field, she became the first woman to coach on the diamond in a regular-season game.

She had previously coached during spring training and in a July 2020 exhibition game. But now, her name will be etched in the record books.

She got a great ovation from the crowd in San Francisco and a nice greeting from Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer. A fantastic moment all around:

Here’s what she said after the game, via the Associated Press:

“I think we’re all inspirations doing everything that we do on a day-to-day basis and I think, yes, this carries a little bit more weight because of the visibility, obviously there’s a historical nature to it,” she said. “But again, this is my job.” …

“Right now in this moment as I reflect back, I reflect back to somebody needed to go out, we needed a coach to coach first base, our first-base coach got thrown out. I’ve been in training as a first-base coach for the last few years and work alongside Antoan, so I stepped in to what I’ve been hired to do, is support this staff and this team,” Nakken said.
