With sports on hold during the coronavirus pandemic and as we try to social distance and isolate to “flatten the curve,” recreational hoops has also been stopped because, as New York governor Andrew Cuomo put it, “There’s no concept of social distancing while playing basketball. It doesn’t exist.”
So many local governments aren’t just saying “no basketball” and that’s it. Authorities have taken down hoops, put up contraptions to prevent them being used or set up ways to block the courts so people don’t even try.
That’s turned into a trend — photos of these hoopless backboards or shut down courts, thanks in part to Bleacher Report reporter Howard Beck, who deemed it #Hoopocalypse.
