The SEC announced its awards for the 2023 football season on Wednesday.
To no one’s surprise, conference champion Alabama was well-represented among the player awards. Edge rusher Dallas Turner, the only player to finish within the top three in the conference in both sacks and tackles for loss, was named Defensive Player of the Year. His teammate and impressive defensive back Caleb Downs was named Freshman of the Year.
LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy favorite Jayden Daniels was awarded Offensive Player of the Year, another nomination that felt like a shoo-in. The Tigers quarterback became the fifth player in SEC history to account for 50 touchdowns in a single season this year.
Missouri might have been the surprise of the conference, finishing with 10 wins to give coach Eliah Drinkwitz Coach of the Year honors.
