SEC announces plans to move to conference only schedules for football

The SEC followed the lead of the Big Ten and Pac-12, announcing conference only schedules for football this fall on Thursday.

It’s been one of the biggest questions out there after the Big Ten and Pac-12 announced a move to conference-only football schedules for this fall. What would the other Power 5 conferences do, most notably the SEC who — right or wrong — help move the needle on football things these days.

Now we have our answer.

According to multiple reports, the conference will be following the Big Ten and Pac-12’s lead and also playing ten-game conference-only schedules in 2020. All nonconference games will be put on the shelf, allowing more flexibility with scheduling amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger was the first to break the news on Thursday.

Unlike the other conferences though, the SEC seems to be not entertaining the idea of starting until September 26. The NCAA has given all FBS teams a blanket approval to start as early as August 29, but it appears as though the conference will wait to iron things out more.

The SEC Championship Game has been set for December 19.

This has some significant impacts on how this college football season will look down the road, and we’ll have more on that later. For now, with the Big Ten, Pac-12, ACC, and now the SEC all making decisions on what the schedules will look like this fall, all eyes are on the Big 12.
