Sebastian Fundora is looking more and more like a contender.
The 6-foot-6 (198 cm) junior middleweight knocked out Habib Ahmed in the second round of a scheduled 10-rounder on the Errol Spence Jr.-Danny Garcia card Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Fundora (16-0-1, 11 KOs) hurt Ahmed (27-2-1, 18 KOs) with a left uppercut about 20 seconds into the fight and never really stopped throwing bombs.
The following round Fundora unloaded 25, 30 hard, accurate shots and his overwhelmed opponent — his hands covering his face in desperation — threw nothing in return.
That prompted referee Laurence Cole to save the Ghanaian, a late replacement, from further punishment. The end came at 1:30 of Round 2.
Fundora’s combination of unusual height and punching power has been formidable against second-tier opponents but he’s only 22 and still developing.
Still, the Southern California fighter probably is within a few fights of becoming a legitimate contender.
