Mariners at Angels: Projected starting pitchers
LHP Justin Dunn vs. RHP Griffin Canning
Dunn has been a bit erratic this season, going 2-1 with a 5.57 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 15 strikeouts across 21 innings over his five appearances.
- Dunn has faced the Angels twice already, combining for 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA, seven walks and three homers allowed.
- The right-hander has posted a pair of quality starts, including his last outing Aug. 23, both against the Texas Rangers.
Canning has recorded an unseemly 0-3 record, 4.88 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with 23 strikeouts across 27 2/3 innings in his six outings.
- Canning posted his only quality start of 2020 on Aug. 1 in a no-decision against the Houston Astros. Since then, he has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his past four outings while failing to record more than 4 2/3 innings.
- Canning has served up five home runs in 13 1/3 innings across his past three starts.

Prediction
Mariners 7, Angels 5
Moneyline (ML)
The MARINERS (+160) are worth a look as moderate ‘dogs in this one. Dunn has posted a quality start in two of his previous three outings. Canning is just too inconsistent for the Angels (-182) and cannot be trusted as the starting pitcher for the favorite.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)
The Mariners (+1.5, -129) are not a terrible play on the run line, but backing them straight-up is the best bet. A good rule of thumb is to avoid the underdog on the run line, almost 99 percent of the time. The Angels (-1.5, +105) can also be ignored; they won’t win with Canning on the bump, let alone by two runs. AVOID.
Over/Under (O/U)
The OVER 10 (-110) is an attractive play; Dunn is hittable, and I’ve picked on Canning enough above. The over is 2-1 in the latter’s past three starts, while also going 3-2 in Dunn’s five outings.
