Sean Payton says Broncos have 9-10 players on roster bubble

“I would say there’s nine or ten spots I’m still looking at,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of finalizing a 53-man roster.

The Denver Broncos have two preseason games remaining and there are currently 91 players on their roster. After wrapping up preseason, the Broncos have to trim the roster down to 53 players by Aug. 27.

Going into Week 2 of preseason, Broncos coach Sean Payton indicated there are nine to ten spots still being sorted out.

“There’s a lot that goes into that 53 cut because when you think about it, at one stroke — I don’t know how many times, 32 or whatever — there’s a lot of players that hit that wire,” Payton said last week. “Obviously, the players waived can be claimed if they’re on their first contract or the players [who are] terminated are free agents.

“A lot happens and there’s a lot of evaluation going on. We talk [about this] all the time, you’re not just competing with your position group. You’re competing with the other 31 positions that you play. You go through this exercise. I would say there’s nine or ten spots I’m still looking at and George [Paton] is looking at. We’re discussing. We have another game here to use. It’s the second preseason game, so we still have a lot of time.”

Denver will have to make 38 roster moves to get down to an initial 53. The Broncos can then build a 16- or 17-player practice squad. So of the 91 players currently on the roster, 21 won’t be with the team in any capacity by the end of the month. These next two games will be crucial for players on Denver’s roster bubble.
