Former North Carolina running back Javonte Williams is getting ready to make his return after suffering a knee injury early in 2022 that cost him most of the season. As Williams spent the offseason rehabbing, he returned quicker than some expected.
And now with the Broncos set to host the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1, Williams could have a big role in the offense.
Sean Payton met the media earlier in the week and was asked about Williams’ status. The head coach revealed that Williams will play a big role in the gameplan and Payton hasn’t set a number of snaps for him just yet.
Broncos HC Sean Payton on RB Javonte Williams' expected involvement in Week 1:
"Look, he’s going to play a big role. I haven’t put together a [snap] number for him. … He’s moving well. He’s strong and healthy."

In two seasons with the Broncos, Williams has rushed for 1,107 yards and 4 touchdowns in limited play. He’s also added 59 receptions for 392 yards and 3 touchdowns.
With Melvin Gordon no longer in the mix, Williams is expected to be the lead back eventually for Denver this season, if he can stay healthy. But first things first, he can make a big first impression on Sunday.
