Sean McVay expresses confidence in Jonah Williams ahead of roster cuts

Sean McVay complimented Jonah Williams for his performance in the preseason for the Rams, indicating he will make the 53-man roster.

Jonah Williams was among the large group of players on the Los Angeles Rams that entered the preseason on the roster bubble. Following a productive trio of games in the preseason, Sean McVay said the Rams are confident in Williams entering the 2022 season.

“He’s done a good job. He’s really been a consistent player and he understands how we want to play up front, so that’s been a real positive,” McVay said. “We have some good depth across the defensive line. When you look at Eric Henderson and Skyler Jones, they’ve done a great job really being able to develop. Obviously, what a great example they have in Aaron (Donald) to see what it looks like every single day. But I’ve been really pleased with Jonah Williams and he’s a guy we have a lot of trust in.”

After losing Sebastian Joseph-Day in free agency, the starting defensive front for the Rams will be Aaron Donald, Greg Gaines, and A’Shawn Robinson. While the starting trio is a formidable unit, the depth on the defensive line is a question mark.

Despite the concerns about depth on the defensive line, McVay appears to be confident that Williams can contribute as a backup. In the three exhibition contests Los Angeles played in, the third-year interior defender tallied six tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss.

Given McVay’s glowing comments about Williams on Monday, it seems as if the Weber State product will join Donald, Gaines, Robinson, and Marquise Copeland on the 53-man roster to begin the 2022 season.
