Sean McVay confirms Rams have talked to teams about trading Ernest Jones

Sean McVay says the Rams are open to trading Ernest Jones and have had dialogue with other teams

Ernest Jones made it clear to everyone on Sunday that he never requested a trade from the Los Angeles Rams. He tweeted that exact message before deleting the post less than an hour later, and on Monday, Sean McVay confirmed what the linebacker said.

McVay told reporters that no one said Jones requested a trade, something that apparently got lost in translation when news broke Sunday of the Rams granting Jones permission to seek a trade. The coach also said that the Rams have had talks with Jones’ reps and other teams about a potential trade, so the team is open to dealing the fourth-year linebacker.

It’s still a very surprising development between the Rams and Jones, who had contract talks earlier this spring but the team has decided not to extend him at this time.

“In his defense, he’s right. He never requested a trade,” McVay said. “We had communication with his representation, there’s been some dialogue with teams and that’s kind of where it’s at. These are parts of the profession and they’re not fun parts, but they are real parts that you have to acknowledge. Ernest is a pro in every sense of the word.

Jones is entering his fourth season in the NFL and was a full-time starter last year, playing 15 of 17 games and recording 145 tackles. He emerged as a key playmaker on defense for Los Angeles and was expected to be a team captain once again this year, but it’s possible his time with the Rams is coming to an end.
