Seahawks WR DK Metcalf traded to NFC rival in mock proposal

Seahawks WR DK Metcalf traded to NFC rival in mock proposal

The Seattle Seahawks rarely get discussed in the national media landscape, but when they are, it usually has to do with one of these two topics (if not combined)

  • The Seahawks are headed for a down year
  • The Seahawks should trade DK Metcalf

Despite the fact Seattle routinely has much stronger seasons than the media or Vegas odds predict, or the fact they’ve shown absolutely no inclination of moving on from their star wide receiver, these talking points persist. The latest one comes from BVM Sportsdesk, that suggests the Seahawks could trade Metcalf to, wait for it, the Dallas Cowboys.

According to BVM’s analysis, “If the Seahawks’ playoff hopes fade, they could reconsider Metcalf’s future, especially with his contract expiring after 2025. The Dallas Cowboys, with an “all-in” approach, may pursue Metcalf to enhance their offense, pairing him with standout wideout CeeDee Lamb. The Seahawks could seek high-value picks and possibly additional players in exchange, making this a significant transaction for both teams.”

Where to begin? First and foremost, it is hard to imagine the Cowboys making a major move like this to acquire Metcalf. They dragged their feet in contract negotiations with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, so why would they get another wide receiver who is sure to command an equal-if-not-greater salary when his contract expires in two years? Besides, they’re in a similar stalemate with quarterback Dak Prescott. Dallas may say they’re in a “win now” situation, but their actions (such as keeping head coach Mike McCarthy) suggest they’re content with the status quo.

Secondly, and more importantly, why would the Seahawks move on from Metcalf? There haven’t been rumblings of unhappiness from either side with the other, and teams who trade away talented receivers like Metcalf rarely find their equivalent. Just ask the Tennessee Titans and AJ Brown.

Lastly, the NFL trade deadline is just after Week 9, and the Seahawks don’t have a bye until Week 10. Seattle will have already played the majority of their season by then, and unless they have a truly disastrous start, say something along the lines of 3-6 or worse, it’s hard for me to say they will be out of the playoff picture. Especially since the new 7-team playoff format keeps more of the conference alive for the Wild Card than ever before.

It’s a fun thought experiment, and a Cowboys offense with Metcalf in the mix would surely be lethal. But for now, it is highly unlikely this will be anything more than an early September hypothetical.
