Seahawks Week 4 QB preview: 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo

They have a chance at a “get right” game against a quarterback they have had success against.

The Seattle Seahawks are reeling after two-straight ugly losses. They have a chance to right the ship with another familiar foe in San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo had a meteoric rise to stardom by starting his career 7-0 in relief of Tom Brady with the Patriots and eventually the 49ers after being traded to the Bay Area in mid-2017. After years of question marks surrounding the position, Garoppolo provided a ray of hope for Niners fans.

Interestingly enough, Garoppolo made his debut for the 49ers in a 24-13 loss to the Seahawks where he threw his first touchdown pass as a Niner as the game ended.

While San Francisco has unquestionably been a far more competitive team with Garoppolo under center – a lofty 36-13 record with a trip to the Super Bowl as well – he is often regarded as the weak link for an otherwise excellent 49ers team.

Garoppolo is solid, yet unremarkable, and seems to struggle in crunch time when games are tight. It is this weakness at quarterback which convinced 49ers brass to trade up and draft star prospect Trey Lance from NDSU to be a potential heir-apparent.

However, the Lance Era has yet to arrive as Garoppolo is still the starting quarterback and is off to a decent start this year. The Seahawks are more familiar with Garoppolo and have a 2-1 record over the former Patriots backup.

The Seahawks defense has been struggling mightily. They have a chance at a “get right” game against a quarterback they have had success against. If they are unable to take advantage of Garoppolo’s mediocrity then it will not bode well for any hopes Seattle can turn it around.
