Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny could go back on IR (again)

Seattle needs a potent run game now more than ever but has been unable to thanks to a slew of injuries.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has to be sick about the state of his running back room. With Russell Wilson struggling since his return from the first significant injury of his career, Seattle needs a potent run game now more than ever. However, the team has been unable to thanks to a slew of injuries.

Last night, Carroll revealed it’s about to get even worse. He told reporters that former first-round pick Rashaad Penny could go back on injured reserve. Penny suffered a hamstring injury on his first carry of the game last week against Arizona. It was an 18-yard scamper that flashed some of the potential we’ve seen from Penny every now and then but not often enough.

Penny spent several weeks on IR earlier this year with a separate calf issue, which means if he goes back his season is over. He’d finish the year with just 43 yards on 17 carries (2.5 YPC). He has not scored a touchdown since the 2019 season.

It’s tough not to feel sympathy for Penny, who’s injury luck has been horrific since that campaign. If he does sit-out the remainder of the season, he will have missed 34 games and appeared in 31 since he was drafted.

Seattle decided to pass on Penny’s fifth-year option, so he will become a free agent in 2022.
