Seahawks QB Geno Smith takes accountability for late-game INT

The Seattle Seahawks suffered heartbreak on Sunday, losing 27-24 to the Minnesota during Sunday’s Week 16 contest. The Seahawks had an opportunity to win the game late. Starting quarterback Geno Smith took possession of the ball trailing by three with 55 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

The drive unfortunately began in familiar fashion. Needing a field goal to send the contest to overtime, starting right tackle Abe Lucas was whistled for a false start penalty, backing the offense up to the 12-yard line. On the first official play on the game-deciding drive, Smith threw an interception to Vikings defensive back Theo Jackson, confirming the loss and ensuring the Seahawks will require outside help to qualify for the postseason this year. It was a flat-footed desperation heave into tight coverage.

Smith took full accountability for the interception in his postgame presser.

“It was an interception, man,” Smith told reporters. “Anything you see that goes wrong, put it on me. Anything that don’t look right, put it on me. I threw a pick,” Smith later said in response to a question about the offense’s ineffectiveness over Seattle’s final two drives.

Smith has now thrown 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions this season. An ineffective offensive line in pass protection, paired with an inconsistent run game, has made Smith’s life increasingly difficult throughout 2024. The veteran quarterback will continue to take responsibility when things go haywire.
