The Seahawks have selected Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
Witherspoon (5-foot-11, 181 pounds) is the highest-ranked cornerback prospect in this class and has skills that fit what Pete Carroll loves at this position. In 41 games at Illinois Witherspoon totaled five interceptions, 25 pass breakups and 11.5 tackles for a loss.
Witherspoon projects as the team’s starting left cornerback, giving them a superb 1-2 punch on the boundary by pairing him with Tariq Woolen.
Seattle is getting a fine defender in Witherspoon, but the story may be more about them passing on Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who’s supposed to be the best overall player in the draft.
