Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider held their annual pre-draft press conference with the media on Tuesday via Zoom as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
While most of the discussion was related to the 2020 NFL Draft, the two were asked about the current state of negotiations with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who remains an unrestricted free agent.
“We made an effort to re-sign him,” Schneider confirmed. “The door is not closed, but we couldn’t wait any longer, we had to conduct business. Everything was very cordial, he’s a great guy – represented by a great guy . . . We’ve had great conversations. He’s just going to feel his way through this odd process and we’ll see where that goes.”
With Clowney clearly testing the open market, Seattle added defensive ends Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa back to the roster to assist with the pass rush.
Things could change with Clowney’s camp at any time, but for now, Schneider has made it clear the Seahawks are prepared to move on without him including looking ahead to the NFL draft.
